Bach Flower Remedy: Holly — Supporting Emotional Balance
Taking an active role in your own health, wellbeing, and emotional balance is an important part of self-care. Gentle, natural remedies can offer meaningful support during times of emotional challenge, helping to restore harmony and inner calm.
One such system is Edward Bach’s 38 Bach Flower Remedies. Developed by Dr Edward Bach (1886–1936), a Harley Street physician, these remedies were created after he became dissatisfied with conventional approaches to illness. Turning instead to homoeopathy and holistic healing, Dr Bach believed that emotional imbalance lay at the root of many physical and mental challenges.
His work eventually led him to Wales and later to Mount Vernon in Oxfordshire, now home to the Bach Flower Centre, a living museum dedicated to education and the continued study of these remedies.
The 38 Bach Flower Remedies are grouped into seven emotional categories:
-
Fear
-
Uncertainty
-
Insufficient interest in present circumstances
-
Loneliness
-
Oversensitivity to influences and ideas
-
Despondency or despair
-
Over-care for the welfare of others
Focus Remedy: Holly (For Anger and Hatred)
Holly is often regarded as one of the most significant Bach Flower Remedies, as it addresses emotions that block love and compassion. Dr Bach described Holly as a remedy that “protects us from everything that is not Universal Love.”
Holly is particularly helpful when someone feels overwhelmed by intense negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, suspicion, resentment, or hatred. These emotions may be directed towards others and can sometimes feel uncontrollable or deeply ingrained.
How Holly Can Help
Holly may provide emotional support in the following ways:
-
Assists when feelings of anger, envy, jealousy, hatred, or hostility arise
-
Helps soften emotional hardness and encourages generosity of spirit
-
Supports those who struggle with trust or fear being deceived
-
Eases emotional intensity that can negatively affect relationships with loved ones, colleagues, or friends
-
Encourages heart-opening energy, helping to move beyond resentment and suspicion
At its core, Holly helps reconnect the individual with compassion, understanding, and emotional warmth.
What Taking Holly May Achieve
Regular use of the Holly remedy may:
-
Restore the ability to give and receive love freely
-
Reduce emotional outbursts linked to anger or frustration
-
Support emotional balance during stressful or emotionally charged periods
During seasonal times such as Christmas and the New Year—when emotions can run particularly high—Holly can be especially supportive in encouraging compassion, acceptance, and emotional harmony.
How to Take the Remedy
The glass of water method is a simple and effective way to take Holly, particularly for short-term emotional challenges:
-
Add 4 drops of the Holly remedy to a glass of purified water
-
Sip regularly throughout the day until relief is felt
-
For ongoing emotional patterns, take 4 drops, four times daily
