The Importance of our Food
Foods that Rob your Energy Levels and Foods that Increase Vitality
Many who seek medical attention complain of exhaustion and fatigue. It may be a constant feeling that starts upon waking and continues throughout the day, or it may build up during the day leaving one feeling completely drained by the evening. Some may notice that the fatigue begins after they consume certain foods or beverages.
If your body has been exposed to a large number of toxins like pollution, smoking, food additives, pesticides and high levels of alcohol, then it will have to work harder to eliminate these poisons from the body. The extra energy that the body uses to deal with these toxins may result in feelings of lethargy and fatigue.
One of the biggest ways in which we sabotage our bodies is by not drinking enough water. We drink a lot of coffee, tea and carbonated beverages instead, and although these fizzy drinks contain water, they also contain a number of additives and preservatives. By increasing the amount of water that you drink every day, you will notice a subtle change in your energy as your body becomes more hydrated and starts functioning on a higher level. Drink about eight to ten glasses of water per day to get the best results.
Sugar is also an energy thief. Excess sugar causes fluctuations in blood sugar, so it provides a brief burst of energy the one minute, only to be replaced by fatigue a short while later. By swapping sugar and refined foods for fresh produce and complex carbohydrates you can allow your energy levels to remain constant throughout the day.
White bread, sugary cereals, and pasta made from white flour are all examples of refined carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates still contain the whole grain, including the bran and the germ, so they're higher in fibre and will keep you feeling fuller, thereby sustaining your energy for longer. Examples include wholegrain rice, wholemeal bread, porridge oats and whole wheat pasta. Make a point of becoming aware of the sugar content in packaged products by reading the labels, as some contain high levels of sugar to improve the taste.
Another cause for fatigue may be due to a deficiency in some of the essential nutrients that work together to control and maintain the release of energy from foods, like Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Iron, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Germanium. A balanced diet that includes brown rice, oats, rye, couscous, seeds, nuts, fish, poultry and fresh fruit and vegetables can contribute towards better absorption of these essential nutrients. A good multi-vitamin supplement can also help to increase stamina if you feel run down.
Please consult with your Doctor if you are unsure about any of the above.
