What is in a colour?

 

 

 

 

Each colour feels different to you. You only have to think of bright red and cool blue to know this. Different colours vibrate at different rates and therefore we experience them differently.

The prime colours are red, yellow and blue. All other colours are a mix of these. For example, orange is two parts yellow and two parts red whereas violet is two parts red and two parts blue.

Each colour has its own vibration level and brings us different qualities. Intuitively we read the qualities of colours and are attracted to what we need. The meaning of colour has crept into our language – such as having a blue day, red fire of passion.

We ourselves are made of colour. Each of our chakras has a different colour. Originating in Hinduism and Tantric Buddhism, chakras are energy centres in our bodies through which energy flows. There are seven key ones, which align with our spine up through our bodies. Each has a specific colour and shape and is associated with a specific organ and with specific emotions.

It is through your emotions that you speak to the universe and the universal energy, so it is worth understanding colours and our emotions. Below is a brief outline of the key chakras, where they are in the body, their colour and the emotions associated with them. To aid anyone who may be colour-blind, I have also added the symbols for each chakra so you can follow the meaning by shape rather than colour.

Root Chakra. Found at the base of our spine in the tailbone area. Red in colour, it is our foundation and addresses survival issues such as food and money.

Sacral Chakra. Found in the lower abdomen about two inches below the navel. Orange in colour, it is abundance, well-being, pleasure and sexuality.

Solar Plexus Chakra. Found in the upper abdomen in the stomach area. Yellow in colour, it is our ability to be confident and in control of our lives. It gives us our self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Heart Chakra. Found in the centre of the chest just above our heart. Green in colour, it is our ability to love. It gives us our love, joy and inner peace.

Throat Chakra. Found in the throat. Blue in colour, it gives us our ability to communicate, express our feelings and the truth.

Third Eye Chakra. Found in the forehead between the eyes. Indigo in colour, it is our intuition, imagination, wisdom, ability to think and make decisions.

Crown Chakra. Found at the very top of the head. Mauve in colour, it is our connection to spirituality, pure bliss.

Orange brings many positive aspects such as independence, sociability, courage, optimism, creativity, ability to manifest.

Orange is also a good healer especially for shock, trauma and abuse.

You don’t need a memory bank of all of the qualities of colour. All you need to do is follow your intuition. Your soul carries this wisdom for you and will guide you to use the right colours in a given circumstance.

I was reminded of this when I was ill in bed following a betrayal by a friend which ran very deep for me. Out of the blue my partner gave me some roses with an unusual peachy, orange colour.

Then I remembered orange was good for healing shock. My partner would not have known this but he is very good at following his intuition.

Orange is not a colour that is used much in western cultures. Perhaps we should make more use of it.
