Mother’s Day – A Time to Reconnect

Why do we celebrate Mother's Day?

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates around the world, with the common month’s being March or May. Although, different countries celebrate on different dates, the sentiment is still the same, to show our respect, recognition, thanks, and love towards the mothers in our lives and thanking them for showing us how to connect with the world and people around us.

Celebrating Mother’s Day is not just about gifts and recognising our biological connection, but the emotional bond and the unconditional love and support our mother figures provide us in mind, body, spirit, and soul.

Showing gratitude towards our Mother figures

“Motherhood is the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary – it's an act of infinite optimism.” - Gilda Radner

A mother’s recognition on Mother's Day goes beyond cards, flowers, chocolates, and trinkets. For some Mother’s Day itself can be a tough time of remembrance. Not everyone has a close bond with their mothers, and some may have lost their mothers. However, if we are fortunate enough, we can look back and show our gratitude towards the maternal figures in our lives for giving us the support and strength needed to help us become the people we are today.

Whether the maternal figure in your life is your biological mother, grandmother, auntie, sister, cousin or even your best friend, there are many ways you can show your appreciation this Mother’s Day:

  • Just say it – ‘Thank you for being there for me’, ‘I appreciate all you’ve done’, ‘you inspire me’, ‘I love you’.... a few simple spoken words can make an impact far greater than you will ever realise. It is a sincere way to express your gratitude regardless of distance or wealth and a valuable way to empower and grow feelings of confidence and recognition within the mother figure in your life.

  • A well-deserved treat – Ok, so Mother’s Day isn’t all about material things, but sometimes it is nice to just receive a gift big or small. Find out what your mother absolutely loves and give her a well-deserved treat this Mother's Day. Whether it’s her favourite cupcake from the local bakery she never gets a chance to pick up or that vinyl that reminds her of a fond memory, give her something that will make her feel genuinely appreciated!

  • A Picture is worth a thousand words – Remember all those photos taken growing up, some a little cringeworthy, that frilly dress or denim dungarees with patent boots? Or those sentimental photos cuddling up with your mother? Take some time to put together a photobook or mini collage or even a slide show on your computer and share it with her. Even if you are not able to be close to your mother this Mother's Day, make a cup of tea or coffee and schedule in some time for a video chat.

  • Role reversal time – How many times have our mothers run around after us, helping, us, supporting us, making meals, driving us around, being a shoulder to cry on, looking after us when we have been unwell, teaching us and being there when we have needed them most? This Mother's Day, how about we take on our mother’s responsibilities for the day and give her some time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Give the house a clean, do the shopping, cook her favourite meal, watch her favourite movie with her. Make the day about her and make her feel she is the most important person in the world!

  • Reconnect – It's easy to lose sight of who our mothers were before they became mothers! Mother’s Day (or any other day) is the perfect time to sit down and reconnect. Find out more about your mother, what she loves, her passions in life, her hopes, and dreams. Not only will it help you to learn more, but it will help your mother to reconnect with herself spiritually, grow her confidence and feelings of empowerment.

  • Remembrance – For many, Mother’s Day is a time for remembrance and reflection. Mother’s Day can be a sad time for those who have lost loved one. However, it is an important time to remember the positive impact our loved ones have made in our lives and how their memories and lessons we have learnt from them continue to help us grow spiritually and mentally.

A time to reflect

With lockdowns, restrictions and social distancing, the importance of celebrating Mother's Day and showing gratitude to the maternal figures in our lives, giving thanks for all they have done and continue to do, whether they are in our lives or not, is ever more important.
